Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch’s National Report

24 January 2019

The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine welcomes the publication of the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch’s (HSIB) report on the Transfer of Critically Ill Adults, and notes how important a well-functioning critical care network can be for transfers and general cross-regional support and development.

Intensivists often accompany critically ill patients during transfer to tertiary centres but their absence from the hospital during a transfer can impact on the patient care within trusts, particularly out of hours or at weekends.  The Faculty will be delighted to work with the Department of Health and Social Care and help provide a unified, appropriately resourced approach as recommended by the HSIB and to consider the role of novel but safe workforces in this area, such as the involvement of Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.
