National Letter - Release for work for the wider NHS

7 July 2017

The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine welcomes the recent letter to employers sent by the GMC, NHS England and the Chief Medical Officers of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

We strongly support its call for employers to look favourably on requests from doctors applying for absence in order to undertake national work for their specialty and, ultimately, their patients.

As the letter rightly says, “The part time work these people undertake alongside their clinical duties contributes a great deal to the quality and safety of patient care, medical education and to the planning, delivery and independent assurance of the safety and effectiveness of both local and regional health services.”  The work of the Faculty relies on the passion and hard work of individuals who are able to be released from their Health Boards and Trusts to undertake essential work in education, standards and safety.
