NHS Pensions Update

22 November 2019

NHS England’s proposals to pay any NHS pensions tax charges incurred by senior clinicians during the 2019 to 2020 tax year has been approved by the government today.

The Faculty welcomes this announcement. We know from this year’s census that many Critical Care consultants are working in excess of 10PAs to ensure safe patient care and we would echo the comments of our colleagues in the Royal College of Physicians that a longer term solution will be required to ensure that we are able to maximise the input of Critical Care clinicians throughout the entirety of their careers.

"This is a much needed response by NHS England to the current situation and hopefully will have an immediate impact for our patients. A comprehensive review of the pension taxation system is now required to ensure that our workforce can continue to provide safe, high quality care."
