New Guidance Published: Training Capacity Assessment for Intensive Care Units
The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) is pleased to announce the publication of new national guidance:
“Principles of a Training Capacity Assessment” and its accompanying "Training Capacity Assessment Form".
This new guidance has been developed to support Clinical Directors, Faculty Tutors, Regional Advisors and Training Programme Directors in reviewing and evaluating their unit’s ability to deliver high-quality training to all learners working within Intensive Care Medicine (ICM).
Why this matters
The Training Capacity Assessment guidance reflects the increasing complexity and multidisciplinary nature of ICU training environments. It emphasises the importance of ensuring that supervision, educational opportunities, and resources are aligned with the training needs of Intensivists in Training (IiTs), trainee Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (tACCPs), and other members of the resident medical workforce, including Foundation Doctors, Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs), and SAS doctors.
What’s included?
- A comprehensive framework outlining key factors to consider when assessing training capacity, from workforce composition to educational infrastructure.
- Clear actions for clinical leadership, supporting equitable and sustainable training provision.
- A structured assessment tool to help capture relevant workforce and supervision data, identify gaps, and support internal reviews or planned expansions.
- Integration with national standards, including alignment with GPICS, COPMeD’s Gold Guide, and GMC-recognised supervision requirements.
The accompanying Training Capacity Assessment Form v1.0 is an advisory tool designed to support consistency and good practice across the UK. It may be adapted to suit local contexts and used to inform internal reviews or development plans.
