Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • General Critical Care unit
  • Regional tertiary centre for Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Maxillo-facial surgery
  • High volume of elective and emergency colorectal surgery
  • Local population has an above average level of co-morbid disease and live in areas of high deprivation
  • There is no split site working at this site
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • Recruiting for multiple multi-centre RCTs: GenOMICC, ABBRUPT, GUARDS, REMAP-CAP, MOSAICC
  • Have successful mentoring multiple members of staff through the Associate PI scheme
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • In-Hours: 3x consultants, ~10x resident staff (mix of doctors and ACCPs)
  • Out-of-hours: 2x consultants in evening, 1x consultant on-call overnight, 1x ST4+ or equivalent doctor, 2x FY2+ doctors / or ACCPs
  • MDT: dedicated Critical Care Pharmacist, Psychologist, Associate Psychologist, 2x SLT, 2x Dieticians, 1x OT
  • Rotational Physiotherapists and additional rotational Pharmacist

 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies - usually done by Anaesthetics, although ICM often support
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab - usually done by Anaesthetics, although ICM can support
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly consultant led Critical Care teaching incl. monthly simulation

  • Weekly journal club
