CO poisoning can lead to changes within the central white matter of the brain (for example globus pallidus, putamen and caudate nucleus). MRI scanning can reveal further changes; in some patients a delayed leukoencephalopathy may occur over a number of weeks and in some cases this may resolve and improve.
