What investigations should she have performed initially?

  • Arterial blood gas
  • Vital capacity measurement
  • Bloods including: Thyroid function tests, electrolytes, inflammatory markers, blood cultures, autoimmune screen, viral serology
  • Urine cultures
  • Chest radiograph – looking for aspiration pneumonia
  • CT head to exclude an intra-cranial diagnosis causes and to ensure it is safe to undertake lumbar puncture
