Cerebral Gas embolism is a preventable medical emergency and all preventative steps should be put in place which are to:
- Keep the patient flat
- Maintain oxygenation and provide haemodynamic support according to the ABC approach
- Early vasopressor/Ionotropic initiation
- Attempt aspiration if CVC in situ.
- Consider Durant position
- Stop or minimise further air entry immediately.
- Check all intra vascular access devices for their integrity, proper connections, valve function, air in lines and correct any defects
- Notify the surgeons
- Reduce the size of embolism by using the highest possible FiO2
- Referral to the nearest Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy unit immediately
