Published 27/11/2025

What Causes Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira.

Humans become infected through:

- Direct contact with urine or tissues of infected animals

- Indirect contact with contaminated water or soil

Common reservoirs include rodents, cattle, pigs, and dogs. Outbreaks are especially common in the tropics and can be associated with flooding, poor sanitation, and freshwater recreational activities.
