The Bronchoscopy in Intensive Care (BrIC) ‘TOTAL AIRWAY BRONCHOSCOPY’ course is a multidisciplinary, one-day, hands-on training bronchoscopy course for those involved in acute and critical care (anaesthetics, intensive care, emergency medicine and acute medicine). It is designed to improve bronchoscopy practice for ICU, anaesthetic, and acute care indications, including upper airway management and lower airway diagnostics and therapy. Areas covered include preparation, handling, dexterity, navigation, sampling, foreign body retrieval, airway haemorrhage control, percutaneous tracheostomy and bronchoscopy in the non-intubated patient. There is a large emphasis on simulated scenarios, patient safety and team working.

The BrIC Total Airway Bronchoscopy Course delivers workshop based, hands-on practice, allowing course participants to attain competency acquisition through interaction with various bronchoscopy simulation models including established and new virtual reality and artificial intelligence systems. The highly experienced international faculty will be running the varied skills stations.

Our international faculty of experts in the upper and lower airways, includes specialist airway anaesthetists, intensive care specialists, pulmonary bronchoscopists, thoracic surgeons, bronchoscopy specialist nurses and Educationalists.

The course is supported by several industry partners (Olympus, AMBU, VERATHON, The Surgical Company, Fisher & Paykel), providing the latest equipment and educational tools for the skills practised on the day.

Places are limited and are allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

Suitable for core anaesthetic/ACCS trainees, registrars and consultants in ICU, Anaesthesia and Acute Medicine, nurses and ACCPs, particularly those with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine or advanced airway skills.

Aims of the course:

To enable the participants to enhance their skills in performing bronchoscopy in acute and critical care settings for the commonly encountered indications.

Objectives:

By the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Understand the indications and contraindications for bronchoscopy in the ICU
  • Recall bronchial tree anatomy and apply it to bronchoscopy performance
  • Set-up video-bronchoscopy and portable single use systems for emergency situations
  • Improve or reinforce your advanced upper airway techniques and protocols
  • Appreciate improved skills in handling of the bronchoscope, effective airway navigation, and directed sampling/airway clearance through simulation and artificial intelligence tools
  • Manipulate the bronchoscope for real-time visualisation of the correct placement of a tracheostomy, withdrawal of an endotracheal tube and safe needle insertion
  • Have a working understanding of the management of airway haemorrhage and inhalational injury
  • Demonstrate enhanced team working in complex bronchoscopy situations

What does the course involve?

The BrIC Complete Airway course is a one-day course which involves didactic lectures, many practical workshops and experience on bronchoscopy simulators and the latest augmented reality tools. Additionally, a comprehensive review of managing the advanced airway will be delivered.

What does the course fee include?

The fee includes your place on the one-day course, refreshment breaks & lunch. Certificates of attendance will be issued and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points will be available through the Royal Colleges.

Where and when do I register on the day?
