Annual Survey for new ICM Consultants

Introduction

Since 2019, FICM has surveyed doctors completing Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) training to understand their early career pathways. Initially focused on CCT holders, the survey now includes doctors who joined the Specialist Register via the Portfolio Pathway.

Starting in 2025, this will become an annual survey. In October 2025, all doctors who joined the Specialist Register for ICM during 2024, will receive a link to participate.

Your feedback is vital. The insights help shape FICM’s work on careers, recruitment, and workforce planning.

Eligible doctors will receive an email with the survey link. The survey will remain open for five weeks and will be promoted via faculty newsletters, reminder emails and social media.

Why This Matters

Understanding the experiences of doctors as they transition from training to independent practice is essential for shaping the future of Intensive Care Medicine. This survey provides:

  • Workforce Insights: Data on career destinations, working patterns, and retention helps FICM plan for future service needs and advocate for appropriate workforce numbers.
  • Training Evaluation: Feedback on how well training prepared doctors for their roles informs improvements to curricula and support structures.
  • Portfolio Pathway Understanding: As alternative routes to specialist registration grow, we need to understand the challenges and successes of these pathways to ensure fairness and quality.
  • Policy and Guidance Development: Evidence from the survey supports FICM’s work in creating guidance for employers, trainees, and new specialists.
  • Longitudinal Trends: Annual data collection allows us to track changes over time, identify emerging issues, and respond proactively.

Your input directly influences FICM’s ability to support intensivists and maintain high standards in patient care. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.

The survey link will be shared with the class of 2024 during October 2025.
